When Revenue Rises, Frequency Falls
As customers make fewer and more deliberate buying decisions, sustainable growth will depend less on generating ever more attention and more on understanding the quality of revenue—who is buying, why they choose you, how much they buy, and whether they come back.
Fiserv’s September data shows small-business sales rising while transactions decline. When average tickets carry revenue growth, customer frequency can weaken before the income statement makes the risk obvious.
Mission Signal
Revenue can rise while the growth engine weakens.
A business can report stronger revenue while quietly seeing fewer customer visits. The useful question is whether more people are buying, existing customers are buying more, or higher prices are doing the work.
Market Intelligence
Revenue can mask falling customer frequency.
What happened: Fiserv reported September 2026 U.S. small-business sales up 2.2% year over year while transactions fell 2.0% year over year and average tickets rose 4.2%.
Why it matters: Higher prices can temporarily hide weaker traffic.
Opportunity: Review revenue, transactions, average transaction value, and repeat-customer frequency together before choosing the next marketing response.
The customer journey is becoming one commercial system.
What happened: Advertising Week New York framed marketing, media, technology, culture, creators, and commerce as an interconnected ecosystem; TikTok announced new agentic commerce and advertising capabilities at the event.
Why it matters: Customers do not experience the handoffs between marketing, sales, commerce, CRM, and experience as separate systems.
Opportunity: Map Discovery → Interest → Evidence → Transaction → Follow-up → Experience → Return and remove the connection most likely to create friction.
Efficiency makes sameness easier.
What happened: Southwest’s marketing leadership is pursuing a revival of its recognizable maverick spirit through playful advertising and cultural partnerships.
Why it matters: Accessible templates, AI tools, stock libraries, and ad platforms make generic execution easier.
Opportunity: Strengthen a point of view, personality, story, reputation, experience, local connection, and distinctive creative codes.
Mission Action
Run the Revenue Quality Test.
Compare the last 90 days with the same period last year. Measure revenue, transactions or customers, average transaction value, and repeat-customer rate. If revenue rises while transactions and repeat purchases fall, the next strategic problem may be visible before it appears on the income statement.
QTAST Thought
Revenue is the result. Frequency exposes the condition of the engine.
