More Sales. Less Profit.
As consumers become more financially selective and businesses face pressure to generate growth, advantage will increasingly belong to companies that understand their economics, defend their value, strengthen customer relationships, and turn marketing investment into sustainable profit.
The central opportunity is protecting profitability while building more resilient demand. For SMBs, the question is not simply how to generate more sales, but how to build a commercial system that converts demand into sustainable profit.
Mission Signal
Revenue growth is not automatically business growth.
The New York Fed’s September 2026 survey found median one-year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 3.9%, while household financial-condition perceptions and expectations deteriorated. Spending-growth expectations rose and labor-market expectations mostly improved—an environment where customers may still buy but expect a clearer reason to do so.
Market Intelligence
The market is rewarding commercial discipline.
What happened: The New York Fed reported September median one-year-ahead inflation expectations at 3.9%, the highest reading since May 2023.
Why it matters: Customers may be asking harder questions about value, risk, and purchase justification. Broad discounts can reduce margin without resolving that uncertainty.
Opportunity: Review positioning, offer architecture, pricing, guarantees, and proof before increasing advertising expenditure.
More advertising does not automatically justify a weaker margin.
What happened: Digiday reported that five media buyers saw client Amazon Ads spending up roughly 15%–40% year over year ahead of the October 6–7 Prime Big Deal Days event. The interview-based figures do not represent the entire advertising market.
Why it matters: Acquisition cost, conversion, discounts, fulfillment, transaction costs, and contribution margin determine whether demand is worth scaling.
Opportunity: Calculate contribution margin after discounts, advertising, fulfillment, and transaction costs before approving a promotion.
Attention has to create understanding before it can create action.
What happened: In a campaign-specific Birra Moretti test reported by Digiday, respondents who spent more than 2.2 seconds viewing the ads showed an 8% increase in unaided awareness and a 4% increase in familiarity.
Why it matters: A business can attract attention without creating understanding, create understanding without producing preference, and produce preference without making conversion easy.
Opportunity: Test Attention → Understanding → Preference → Action, then make sure customers know what to do next.
Mission Action
Conduct a 30-Minute Offer Profitability Audit.
Choose your three highest-selling offers. For each, examine selling price, direct delivery cost, acquisition cost, contribution margin, and repeat-purchase potential. Then identify which offer creates the most sustainable profit—not simply the most revenue.
QTAST Thought
