Customers Are Still Spending. The Cost of Serving Them Is Rising Faster.

As customer spending continues to rise while input costs and executive confidence point to more uncertainty, sustainable advantage will belong to companies that protect margin, clarify value, and connect acquisition to profitable growth.

The central question for an SMB is no longer simply how to generate more revenue. It is how to turn available demand into sustainable profitability through stronger offer economics, differentiated value, and acquisition that earns its place in the margin.

Mission Signal

Demand can grow while the economics of growth deteriorate.

The Census Bureau reported advance September retail and food-services sales of about $745 billion, up 0.8% from August and 6.3% from a year earlier; the estimates are not adjusted for price changes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the final-demand Producer Price Index up 1.3% in September and 6.3% over 12 months.

Market Intelligence

Reported sales need a price-and-margin reading.

What happened: September retail and food-services sales were approximately $745 billion, up 0.8% month over month and 6.3% year over year. August’s month-over-month change was revised to 1.3%.

Why it matters: Higher reported sales can reflect more customers, larger baskets, higher prices, or a mix of all three.

Opportunity: Separate transaction volume, average transaction value, customer frequency, and contribution margin before deciding what to improve.

Cost pressure changes the definition of a successful campaign.

What happened: The final-demand Producer Price Index rose 1.3% in September, with final-demand energy up 10.8% and transportation and warehousing services up 3.4%.

Why it matters: More sales do not automatically create more profit when delivery, material, transportation, fulfillment, or acquisition costs rise at the same time.

Opportunity: Use contribution profit per acquired customer—not attributed revenue alone—to guide investment.

Product information is becoming acquisition infrastructure.

What happened: Shopify is giving more connected AI agents access to product listings and purchase flows; official materials describe structured product information as part of AI-channel discovery.

Why it matters: AI commerce does not replace clear positioning, accurate pricing, availability, and trustworthy customer information.

Opportunity: Audit product and service information across the website, catalog, CRM, and commerce channels.

Mission Action

Conduct a 45-Minute Margin Protection Audit.

Choose the three products or services responsible for the largest share of revenue. For each, compare today’s selling price, direct delivery cost, customer-acquisition cost, and contribution margin with the figures from three months ago. Identify one corrective test for the offer with the greatest margin deterioration.

QTAST Thought

More demand does not automatically mean more profit.
